Brick with wood. Exposed brick with surrounding millwork looks timeless and can be a great way to update an older brick fireplace. The untouched brick adds a more textural contrast to a freshly painted mantel and surround. Forgo white or off-white; paint your fireplace surround a bold color and watch your room transform from good to great.
Use a metal chimney with any style. Though more commonly used and associated with a modern aesthetic a metal chimney flue can be used in any room where a more open and light-filled space is desired.
This fireplace is an off-the-shelf Town & Country model from Rustic Fire Place but it came with options. “It runs on natural gas or propane with choices of colors for firebox panels and with either glass or river rock. It can be vented several different ways depending on where it is installed” says Mike Dawson of Rustic Fire Place.
Stone. There are many options of stone to choose from for a fireplace facing. I love to wander at stone yards looking at all the different varieties. Stones such as fieldstone come in many shapes colors and textures. I suggest finding the best installer you can and work with him or her to select the best stone for your fireplace. Around $4.000 to $7.000 for stone and installation.
Side by side. This design works magic as both elements stand side by side in perfect harmony. The television and the firebox are similar in size which helps to balance out each other’s weight on the wall. The materials provide contrast while still tying into the rest of the home’s design. If concrete isn’t the right finish for your fireplace surround try a gray-colored tile to create the same effect.
Many of the new prefabricated metal fireboxes don't even require a chimney. Only if the fireplace is meant to be wood burning is there a need to vent smoke up and out. If it's solely a gas-burning fireplace a direct vent (directly outside behind the fireplace) or a no-vent solution works just fine.

Finished steel. This example shown here is described as having a blued finish. This is not paint but an actual finish process. It’s a great-looking detail for a modern or transitional space. $5.000 to $8.000 for raw materials custom fabrication finishing and installation.
Painted brick. An option I have used often painted brick works every time. If you are longing to update your old red brick but are short on budget paint your brick. Any color can work but white works with so many different styles. Modern rustic and coastal all work with a painted fireplace. If the bricks are being installed new your project can cost $2.000 to $5.000 for raw materials and installation. (Read this before attempting it yourself though).
Slab material. A fully segmented wall pattern in wood creates this transitional center fireplace. A single piece of stone with a hole cut out for the firebox serves as the surround. Smooth lines deliver casual elegance in this family room. Select slabs from a stone yard’s remnants (material left over from other projects) to complete your project at a much lower cost.
