Quite interestingly the term is derived from the French word 'ottomane' which is the feminine version of ottoman. The word could have also been derived from the Italian 'Ottomano' Medieval Latin 'Ottomanus' Medieval Greek 'Othomanoia' from Arabic 'Utmani'. A broad selection of ottomans ensures that there is a piece to suit any taste and any decor. For warm and cozy rooms consider ottomans with bases constructed in rich colors and textured fabrics. Ottomans with legs are a good choice for more formal decorating styles as well as when a lighter look is needed. Often ottomans are chosen to match existing seating but you may want to consider purchasing a distinctive ottoman instead. Ottomans can be used to add decorative interest to a room though a pop of color contrasting texture or a unique shape. While ottomans are primarily intended as a piece of furniture that allows us a chance to relax at the end of a busy or stressful day there's no reason why they can't be stylish too.

Kids love ottomans - and vice versa. Ottomans are child friendly - if a small child falls off an ottoman he or she is unlikely to come to any harm. They can be upholstered in child-friendly fabrics and can offer them a playing surface when they are sitting on the floor. They can be used to sit in front of the TV with a games controller and used as a hurdle in the hall for racing or as a horse when riding!

This works especially well if some of the pieces are as large or even larger than the TV. The unusual square piece in the upper left draws attention away from the TV and the other little pieces keep the eye moving around.

Storage ottomans are virtually upholstered boxes with padded lids. The lids are hinged and open up to provide storage space that can be used in a number of ways. For example an ottoman can be used as a coffee table with a sofa bed and also to store the bedding for when the sofa is needed as a bed. It can be used as a piano stool storing sheet music and other items. They can be used in children's rooms for toys computer or video games and controllers and in your bedroom as a handy seat for dressing while storing bedding spare pillows or your nightclothes. These are just examples - an ottoman can be used to store whatever you need it to.
