The fireplace is often the most commanding element in any room it’s in. Size and abundance of material are often factors but as renovation specialist Ron Parko points out our eyes are naturally drawn to the darkest object in a room anyway. Oftentimes that’s the firebox when it’s unlit. Naturally you want this element and everything that surrounds it to complement the rest of your home. In many older homes where large brick fireplaces prevail this can pose a challenge.

Texture twist. You can use texture when combining a fireplace and television on the same wall. The extra texture actually makes the components subtler; the eye skims over the TV and fireplace instead focusing on the wood stone and cubbies. Even if your fireplace is front and center you can camouflage it by using the same neutral colors for the firebox as the surrounding stone.

Ottomans are an added luxury to any sectional but they come in so many shapes sizes and styles that choosing one can be overwhelming. The word could have also been derived from the Italian 'Ottomano' Medieval Latin 'Ottomanus' Medieval Greek 'Othomanoia' from Arabic 'Utmani'. Ottoman was also the name of an empire of the late 16th century.

A round ottoman is great for a sectional with a wedge or rounded corners. With no corners it is easy to get around.

Moroccan poufs are a dime a dozen these days but this lime-green one from Serena & Lily stands out from the crowd for obvious reasons. Or choose another bold color to take a room from blah to brilliant.

Sometimes the best way to deal with these two focal points is to separate them. This design makes great use of an angled wall while still making it easy to enjoy the fireplace and the TV at the same time. Connect your fireplace mantel visually to the main shelving. In a design like the one shown here you also could carry over all three shelves to create a triple mantel.
