Matched in scale. This fireplace and television one on top of the other make for a stunning lesson in scale. The perfectly sized components almost make them look like they're combined. When placing your TV above your fireplace make sure it's low enough to be comfortable to look at. You don't want anyone to crane a neck when trying to relax and watch TV.

Avoid architectural features. The flue can also bend and be rerouted to avoid architectural features such as overhangs. Again (this can't be stressed enough) follow the building codes and manufacturer specifications when doing any chimney installation.

Separate. Separating the television and fireplace within the same space is difficult to get right but it’s done masterfully here. The wood paneling running up the wall and over the ceiling to surround the fireplace wall makes for a perfect integration — it almost feels as if they are on the same wall. Think carefully about your furniture plan when you have two focal points in a living room. What would you and your guests prefer to see — the fireplace or the television?

To take a less hypermodern approach place a TV in a full bookshelf system (rather than free-floating minimalist shelves) to create a more transitional look. Encasing the TV in custom framing helps it blend even further into the casework so only the essential screen is visible (and not shiny brand names). Keep in mind that a frame will block the remote receiver so you may need a device to reroute the signal from a receiver tucked on a nearby shelf.

Adjustable shelves make room for a variety of components. While most pieces have the same depth they won't always be the same height. Using furniture with fixed shelves means running the risk of having a component not fit or needing to stack on on top of the other potentially limiting its use and risking overheating.

Put speakers in the ceiling. You can have an entire sound system completely hidden from view with ceiling-integrated speakers. This is an excellent way to have high-fidelity audio and free up space in your home to get creative with your design. When it’s time to watch a film speakers integrated into the ceiling make viewers feel as though they are right in the middle of the action — perfect for a nail-biting thriller or spellbinding fantasy flick.
